What Makes an Award-Winning Driller

9 February, 2026

What makes an award-winning driller? Every year, the Australian Drilling Industry Association (ADIA) Awards surface an important question: What actually separates an award-winning driller from everyone else doing solid, reliable work in the field? It’s not metres alone. It’s not bravado. It’s not who pushes hardest through bad ground. When we analysed the 2025 winners and finalists, a far more consistent picture emerged — one built on judgement, discipline and trust. Here’s what defines modern excellence in drilling:

  1. Judgement beats brute force Knowing when to push — and when not to.
  2. Safety is personal, not procedural It’s about going home. Not ticking boxes.
  3. Sample quality is non-negotiable Good drilling isn’t just depth — it’s delivering data the client can trust.
  4. Leadership shows up early Trainees mentoring. Young drillers running tight sites.
  5. Calm under pressure No escalation. No drama. Just process.
  6. Communication as a safety tool Issues raised early. Clients kept informed.
  7. Pride in rig standards Clean, maintained rigs signal professionalism.
  8. Mentoring because they remember being new Explaining the “why”, not just the “how”.
  9. Adapting to technology without abandoning fundamentals Automation as a tool — not a substitute for judgement.
  10. Playing the long game

Consistency over hero moments. Across the awards this year, one theme was unmistakable: The future of drilling is not being built loudly — it’s being built carefully. The message is clear: This is what good looks like in drilling today.
